GFZ was founded in 1992 as the national research institution for geosciences in Germany. GFZ combines all solid earth science fields including geodesy, geology, geophysics, mineralogy, paleontology and geochemistry, in a multidisciplinary scientific and technical environment. The research departments are accompanied, among others, by Technology Transfer Centers, Scientific Infrastructures and Platforms for geological storage, for geothermal energy research, and scientific drilling.
